Physical Computing in the Primary Computing Curriculum

The use of physical devices, such as the micro:bit, in the primary computing curriculum can bring the subject to life for the children. The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) argue that the use of physical devices supports connections to wider subjects.

This short course will look at three different devices and the different projects you can complete with them. The devices we will examine include the micro:bit, the Crumble board, and MakeyMakey boards. The sessions will be practical and allow you play with the device and develop your subject knowledge.

The course will be delivered by Sam Lovatt, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education and the Subject Knowledge Lead for Primary Computing at St Mary's University.

St Mary’s School of Education offers longstanding excellence in professional learning, which is affirmed by our reputation for education degrees, active research centres, and 'outstanding' delivery of initial teacher education.

Date and Time

The course will run over three twilight sessions from 4pm to 5.30pm on:

  • Monday 13th January 2025
  • Monday 3rd February 2025
  • Tuesday 4th March 2025

Location

The course will be held at our main campus, Twickenham.

Price

The full course cost is £180.

Content

Each of the three sessions will follow the same structure, however the device being demonstrated will vary. There will be a brief introduction, followed by working through a project and will conclude with resources and next steps will be shared.

The projects completed will be:

  • MakeyMakey board (a musical instrument)
  • micro:bit (steady hand machine)
  • Crumble boards (cars).

Following the course you will be equipped with skills to engage students with interactive projects using the micro:bit, Crumble board, and MakeyMakey. You will be able to integrate computing with other subjects, enhancing interdisciplinary learning and will be able to develop practical programming and electronics skills through hands-on activities.

The spacing of the lessons is plan ned to allow you to also explore the tools independently before the next session.
