St Mary’s University School of Education is delighted to offer a brand new CPD course for secondary teachers new to delivering religious education.
The course will equip you with the skills and resources to confidently deliver secondary religious education (RE) as a non-specalist. The course will be delivered by Rachel Croft, Senior Lecturer in Education and teaching expert in secondary RE.

Content
Whilst enrolled upon the course you will explore the nuance of the religious education curriculum and how to plan, deliver and assess this effectively. You will have to opportunity to formatively address your personal areas for development and build your confidence in the teaching of this subject.
The key topics that you will study include:
- common misconceptions in religious education
- key concepts in RE and sources of wisdom
- effective scaffolding and modelling in RE
- addresing big questions in religious education
- preparation for examinations.
Through completing this short course, you will:
- have a secure understanding what underpins the RE curriculum and what this means in their own school context
- identify and use a range of strategies to adapt teaching in RE to support all learners to make progress, including introducing appropriate levels of challenge
- confidently identify effective assessment strategies to support the teaching of GCSE Religious Education and identify some common misconceptions
- be confident teaching RE through different disciplinary lenses
- establish next steps to access further opportunities for subject knowledge enhancement.
Requirements
To enrol on this short course, you must:
- be an RE teacher in a secondary school
- be a non-specialist in religious education.
Award
This short course is accredited by CPD UK. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance from St Mary’s University.
