Using wordless picturebooks to develop reading comprehension and visual literacy skills in Key Stage 2

St Mary’s University School of Education is delighted to offer a brand new CPD course for teachers in Key Stage 2 with a focus on how wordless picturebooks might be used to develop pupils' comprehension and visual literacy.

Ensuring children are globally visually literate is important in our increasingly diverse and visual contemporary world. This course offers you the opportunity to develop your use of wordless picturebooks in the Key Stage 2 classroom through an exploration of current pedagogy and its implementation in schools. The course will be delivered by our primary English team, with expertise in curriculum pedagogy and this age phase.

Whilst the reading for pleasure agenda has become established within schools, linking wordless picturebooks to reading comprehension and visual literacy skills is much less so, and this course will offer practitioners the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills, and understanding of this whilst providing examples for school practice.

The School of Education offers longstanding excellence in professional learning, which is affirmed by our reputation for education degrees, active research centres, and 'outstanding' delivery of initial teacher education.
