St Mary’s University School of Education is delighted to offer a brand new CPD course for primary and secondary teachers of students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) or multilingual learners.
The course will equip you with the skills and resources to implement inclusive and equitable classroom strategies for EAL and multilingual learners and will help you maximise their potential. The course will be delivered by Juliette Claro, Lecturer in Education and teaching expert in modern foreign languages.

Whilst enrolled upon the course you will explore the latest research informed practice to support multilingual learners effectively, and look at research-based strategies to help them access the curriculum and thrive in the classroom.
The course reflects on second or third language acquisition and allows for dialogue on assessments, classroom practice, and inclusion. This course will allow you to reflect on your context and consider specific learners you are aiming to support in the classroom.
The key topics that you will study include:
- recent research on second and third language acquisition and supporting students with various levels of English
- the assessment and adaptive teaching cycle for multilingual learners
- building an inclusive community to support EAL and multilingual learners beyond the classroom.
Through completing this short course, you will:
- develop a range of stategies to support learners in your classroom
- increase your understanding of language acquisition and development
- build confidence in facilitating effective teaching and learning for learners with EAL or more than one language.
You will have access to teaching resources for the duration of your course, which will support you in returning to your classroom practice.
Requirements
To enrol on this short course, you must:
- be a teacher, teaching assistant or leader in a primary or secondary school
- have recent classroom experience.
Award
This short course is accredited by CPD UK. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance from St Mary’s University.
