Understanding the Early Years: Learning through play to promote the prime areas of learning

A course designed to reach practitioners across the early years and lower KS1 phases with a focus on developing a practitioner's ability to create a child-centred play-based approach through the use of continuous provision and high-quality adult interactions.

This course is designed for teachers who are new to teaching in the Reception classroom or in Year 1. It focuses on current pedagogy and practices, and explores how multi-sensory learning through play can be used effectively throughout the early years and into Year 1. There will be a specific emphasis on the prime areas of learning throughout the course. This course is delivered by Jo Head and Faye Odurny, lecturers and experts in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Content

Throughout the course you will be introduced to the research which underpins Early Years pedagogy which highlights the importance of senior leaders understanding of this critical period of learning and development, and to the particular paradoxes faced by Nursery and Reception teachers. 

The course will focus on developing practitioners' ability to facilitate child-centred play-based learning through the use of continuous provision and high-quality adult interactions. Practitioners will leave with increased knowledge and understanding of current research and pedagogical approaches. 

Areas and topics covered in the course will include:

  • reflecting on how children learn through play in the Early Years and beyond 
  • exploring how learning through play, using a multi-sensory approach can impact children’s holistic development
  • planning opportunities for effective continuous provision in and beyond the early years classroom.

Requirements 

To enrol on this short course, you should be a teacher who is new to, or are planning to work in, early years or Year 1 classes.

Award 

This short course is accredited by CPD UK. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance from St Mary’s University.
