Training to be a primary school teacher
St Mary’s has been successfully training teachers since 1850 and our highly experienced and committed team are here to support you throughout your journey.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is the professional qualification awarded by the Department for Education. If you have your heart set on becoming a primary school teacher, you will need to choose a degree or pathway leading to QTS.
Foundation year
Foundation Years are designed for those who don’t have the required qualifications to begin a full undergraduate degree straightaway. Successfully completing a foundation year will enable you to apply for BA Primary Education with QTS or BA Education Studies degrees.
Foundation Degree – working whilst you study
Our Foundation Degrees – Early Years FdA or Primary Education FdA – allow you to study at University one day a week whilst you continue to work in an educational setting. On successful completion you can then opt to ‘top-up’ your foundation degree to a full undergraduate degree, either with QTS or without. You can also choose to specialise in SEND or PE on these QTS top-up programmes.
