Alex shares his story since graduating from St Mary's.
How and why did you choose St Mary's?
I chose St Mary's primarily because of its welcoming atmosphere, which I noticed immediately during my only visit to the campus. Initially, my goal was to pursue a career in teaching, and St Mary's is renowned for its excellent teacher training programs. However, once I started my studies, I discovered a passion for law, which has since shaped my academic and professional journey.
What was your course of study? What activities or societies were you involved in during your time at St Mary's?
I pursued a joint honours degree in business law and history. This unique combination not only broadened my academic horizons but also unexpectedly steered my career path in a new direction. Originally, I intended to become a history teacher. However, after participating in several business law classes, I quickly realised where my interest lie. Additionally, I was actively involved in the Law Society, which further enriched my experience and solidified my interest in the legal field.
What are you doing now? Could you describe how your experiences and development been since graduation?
I currently work as a commercial disputes solicitor in London, a role quite different from what you might see on shows like Suits. After completing my undergraduate degree, I pursued further studies to gain the professional qualifications necessary to become a solicitor. My career journey has been diverse from selling watches at John Lewis to volunteering as a police officer in Knightsbridge. These varied experiences eventually led me to secure an entry-level position at a law firm, marking the start of my legal career.
What advice would you offer to our current students?
I encourage all students to actively seek meaningful work experiences as early as possible. The job market can be challenging, especially after graduation. For those interested in law, consider approaching local law firms for potential opportunities, volunteering at organisations like the Citizen's Advice Bureau, and networking with practitioners on LinkedIn. Don’t hesitate to invite professionals out for a coffee, you’d be surprised how many are willing to help and offer advice. Above all, remember to enjoy your time at university, these experiences are invaluable.
In three words, what do you remember most about St Mary's?
Supportive community spirit.
