Chair of Governors
Born in Zambia, Bishop Richard was brought up in Kent.
After study for the priesthood, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Southwark in 1982. Three years of parish ministry was followed by studies of Canon Law at Saint Paul University, Ottawa.
Returning from Canada, he once again worked in a parish but also served as a Reserve Chaplain in the Army.
In 1992 he was appointed as Private Secretary to the Archbishop Michael Bowen, Archbishop of Southwark, holding this post for nine years before being appointed Vicar General of the Diocese. In 2009 he was appointed Bishop of the Forces by Pope Benedict XVI. In March 2015 he was appointed by Pope Francis as Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, and was installed on 28th May 2015.
In addition to this role and his responsibilities as Chair of Governors at St Mary’s he is Chair of the Department for Social Justice of the Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales, Chair of the Plater Trust and Liaison Bishop for Prisons.
Bishop Richard enjoys horse riding, walking and music.
