Pioneering parishes: How local church communities can become guardians of creation

The Catholic Church calls on us to work to promote and protect the natural environment, including by reducing carbon emissions. St. Mary's University, in collaboration with Cafod and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, have organised an event "Pioneering Parishes: How Local Church Communities can become Guardians of Creation" which builds on St. Mary’s University’s “Guardians of Creation” project designed to provide practical guidance to parishes.

In this seminar Ninnaku Oberholzer (King’s College London) will share her postgraduate research on art as a hermeneutical approach to scripture in Reformation Period Christian art. She will explore how art in conversation with scripture might enlighten and challenge traditional readings, with the Virgin Mary playing a key role in such an approach.

Everyone likes a mystery. In this research seminar, Tim Guile (Chair of the English Catholic History Association) is going to relate events that have elements of a good detective story: statues revered for centuries, royal agents bent on the destruction of images, traditionalists trying to preserve sacred objects for future generations and persistent pious legends of true images which one day might be revealed and a devotion revived in the land of ‘Our Lady’s Dowry’.
